Rwanda edges closer to two million Covid-19 vaccinations

A total of 1,000, 439 Rwandans have been fully vaccinated, while 1,822,054 have received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine as of September 14, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health.

The government plans to vaccinate 60 per cent of the population or 7.8 million people by June 2022, and 30 per cent of the population before 2022.

The country started its vaccination exercise in March, with front-line workers in healthcare, including those working in Covid-19 treatment centers and intensive care units and other priority groups of people above 65 as well as those with underlying health conditions.

In August the Rwanda Biomedical Centre launched the third vaccination programme, vaccinating adults in the city of Kigali, targeting to vaccinate 90 per cent of the city’s residents and these adults set to receive their second dose today September 14.

Lt. Col. Dr Tharcisse Mpunga, Minister of State in the Ministry of Health, said the government will soon hit 25 per cent of fully vaccinated people.

“With these people being vaccinated in different parts of the country, and more being administered their second dose in Kigali we will make 25 per cent of the 30 per cent we had set before 2022, and we will be remaining with only five per cent.” He said.

Meanwhile, in 21 districts outside of Kigali vaccination continues where jabs are being administered to 50-year-olds and above as well as to those with chronic health conditions.
