Rwanda, Kenya pledge to boost bilateral trade
Rwanda and Kenya have pledged to promote bilateral trade for mutual benefits.
The willingness to fast-track business relations between the two brotherly countries was expressed by High Commissioner Martin Ngoga and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, during their meeting on January 23, 2024.
They among other things discussed ways to promote business activities at the Port of Mombasa which handles Rwanda-bound goods, and exchanged on how to ensure efficient use of the Northern Corridor.
CS Murkomen thanked Rwanda and the country’s business community for choosing the Port of Mombasa to handle their goods and for using the Northern Corridor.
Meanwhile, Rwanda has expressed interest of establishing its cargo-handling facility at the Naivasha Dry Port, a move that CS Murkomen hailed. He said this will further boost the transit of goods between the two countries.
Moreover, the meeting looked at existing barriers impeding the flow of commodities between the two countries such as non-trade barriers and unnecessary roadblocks on the Northern Corridor. CS Murkomen took note of these challenges and pledged to address them.
Rwanda and Kenya enjoy a long-standing strategic partnership in areas of mutual interest such as trade, education, agriculture and many others. The two countries also work together in different areas under the framework of the East African Community (EAC) of which they are member states.
